Chinese Herbal Medicine
|
Medicinal Chinese herbs have been used for centuries to cure diseases
and alleviate discomfort due to many different disorders. Often, as part of your treatment, an herbal formula will be
suggested for you to take between visits to enhance your healing process.
The herbs that make up the formulas each have their own characteristics which affect the body in different ways. These are called
the herb's properties. An example of an herbal property is temperature, which refers to the temperature, or metabolic rate change,
the herb induces in your body when consumed. When combined together, these herbal concoctions can treat a wide variety of complex
ailments. Modern research shows that Herbal Medicine can
be highly effective in alleviating many disease symptoms. They can be prescribed to help balance hormonal fluctuations that come with menopause, assist with sleeping disorders,
enhance digestion and boost the immune system, just to name a few examples.
Exemplifying this point, the World Health
Organization states that:
* "25% of modern medicines are made from plants first used traditionally (-).
* TM (Traditional Medicine) can also have impact on infectious diseases. For example, the Chinese
herbal remedy Artemisia annua, used in China for almost 2000 years has been found to be effective
against resistant malaria
and could create a breakthrough in preventing almost one million deaths annually, most of them children, from severe malaria.
* In South Africa, the Medical Research Council is conducting studies on the efficacy of the plant
Sutherlandia Microphylla in treating AIDS patients. Traditionally used as a tonic, this plant may increase energy, appetite and
body mass in people living with HIV."
Herbal Formulas can be taken in tea or pill form. At Sierra Acupuncture and Integrative Health Center we will most often offer our
medicinal formulas in a pre-made pill form or powder you can mix with water. We have found this system to be the best suited to
our western life styles.
